Luigi came into the franchise after Mario.  Originally designed as a palette swap image for Mario, the “alternate” Mario eventually became a distinct character with his own personality.  Eventually, the differentiation became stronger, with Luigi becoming physically distinct from Mario.  Whereas Mario was a shorter, more portly guy, Luigi was taller and slimmer.  Both sport bushy, upturned mustaches and have accents roughly equivalent to the borough of Brooklyn in New York.  They are of Italian descent, as much as that is possible in a video game world filled with mushrooms and tubes.

Due to the limitations of the graphics capabilities of earlier video game consoles, the original character sprites had very simple features.  That means that they had blocks of color rather than clearly-defined appearances.  This appearance was considered integral and so newer, more refined incarnations of the characters retain the smooth, simple appearance of the original characters.

Luigi’s jumper is a matte denim affair with no pockets and only basic seam lines.  There are two large yellow fasteners, one at the end of each strap in front.  His long-sleeved shirt is lime green, as is his hat.  Speaking of which, his hat is silk-screened with a circle on the front-center, with a green letter “L”.  This plush hat will probably be the most difficult costume component to source or approximate, unless you buy from specialty costumiers.  Of course, you have to get a bushy, jaunty mustache – indispensable and iconic.

If you want to go for the deluxe complete look, you might want to get a dark brown wig with feelers – often mistaken for sideburns.  Add a pair of white gloves, and you are good to go!
